Computer Confusion

Okay, I confess that I am still, even after having a computer at home and having worked in/around computer stuff too since back in the 60s, still very computer illiterate!

I know absolutely zilch about how to use several computer programs -like Publisher or Access and even Excel too. Well, I've used Excel but don't remember now how to set up a file using Excel to get it to add and subtract and do all that kind of stuff. I can generally manage to use the basic Word Processing type stuff but that is pretty much it.

Now, I've mentioned in the past that I'm planning to set up an account with Etsy.com where I can show and hopefully, sell some of my needle crafts. Supposedly, they walk you through, step by step, of setting up your website with them and "supposedly" this is all a very simple process too. Gosh I hope so cause I really do confuse very easily.

Now I've been seeing recently stuff about "domain names" and also web hosting too. I think I know what domain names are but what the heck is the deal with web hosting and how in blazes does one figure out who offers the best web hosting anyway? And how do I determine what I have to have and what isn't necessary either?

So much stuff -which to me is about as clear as mud or as difficult to comprehend when people start using what I call "computerese" language as it is to read any kind of legal contract with all the "legalese" language of the wherefores and what ifs and such that lawyers have to use instead of just putting things into plain old, simple-to-understand, English!

Anyone else have these confusion issues too?

Unless we are attorney's or work in a law office we all have these issues. You aren't any different than the rest of us. Just saying.

Have a terrific day. :)

I've got to agree with Sandee. There isn't anything in the list of programs you don't understand that I understand either. I stick to the simple stuff and don't venture too far away.

Hopefully you won't have too much trouble following the steps. I've found that if I give something a try, I can get through it. The key is not to panic, and go step by step.

Good luck!

I use Godaddy to host my blog if that is any help. But Blogger will get you a domain name and set you up and you can then use a blogger blog which you are familiar with for your crafts. Probably the best way to go. If you go to your Blogger dashboard and select settings and then publishing you will find the option to buy a domain. Don't make the mistake of choosing something unrelated to your product as in 'oldavonlady'. We all have done it but in this case 'embroderybyjenni.com' or something similar would be better because it tells the search engine what the site is about. Hope that helps.

I don't know about helping Jeni, but it sure makes sense to me Berni. Thanks for that answer, cause I had nothing to offer and wondered the same thing.

Jeni do let us know how you work this out cause some of us might just want to do the same (simlar) thing :-)

For me, I need quiet so I can concentrate. I worked in offices with so much noise for many years and now I just have to have quiet. I do believe you will be able to set up an etsy account, just take it one step at a time.

My job forces me to keep up with the latest software tools. Just wish the dang software we used wasn't such a P.O.S. sometimes. Good luck with your ventures!
