Breathing Room!

Boy, talk about a dilemma. Sometimes it seems this house is just one dilemma after another!

Of course, there's the junk with the SIL and his work philosophy that I think needs to be totally revamped if ever he wants to qualify as really being a "Professional, Self-employed Businessman." Lots of change needs to take place in that area.

Then there's the kids and their problems from time to time -one of them being the allergy issues that little Kurtis seems to have. He has a prescription for Cingulair (I think that's how you spell it) plus every night, he gets a dose of melatonin to help him go to sleep and just in case that doesn't kick in completely, he also gets a dose of benadryl to help with the allergy issues and also adds to the melatonin's effects to get him to go to sleep -and stay asleep -better, longer, etc.

Mandy had talked to some of her friends about some of the issues with Kurtis and several people had suggested maybe we should get a dehumidifier that might help with his allergy issues.

Now I can see where this might be something to consider under some circumstances but I'm not so sure it would be the best thing to have in this house nor would it be the best thing for some other people here either.

You see, we have hot water heat -not steam heat -but those big old radiators and in the winter months especially, the air here is almost as dry as a bone or the Arizona desert.

That, plus the fact that my nasal passages are already over-dry -except when I get a head cold from Hell like I was dealing with for about the past 3 weeks -and I'm wondering if we got a dehumidifier in here, I'd have to figure out a way to get a window open in my bedroom -no easy task to do at this time of year since the SIL has that plastic film stuff tightly in place around the windows in my bedroom. That plus there isn't all that much heat in that room to begin with either so trying to sleep with a bit of "fresh air" with a tad of moisture in it, might just end up freezing my keester, don't 'cha think?

Always something, is it?

I think it is necessary to open the windows every day for a short spell to let the air circulate.
We have nearly always got high humidity in this country.
Hope you all get your individual needs met. Seems a difficult task.

Well, I think just about every family has issues of one kind or another. Your SIL does drive me batty though. I don't think I could live under the same roof. Just saying.

Have a terrific day. :)

If it isn't one thing, it's another. Sounds like your home is already dry enough. Actually a humidifier might do more good than a dehumidifier...

The heat in this house is so dry I have to have the vaporizer going some of the time to get some moisture in the air. I have noticed that when I have the vaporizer going hubby snores not so loudly too.

Have you tried using a saline solution inhaler? Or something similar to import moisture to your nasal tissues? Might be less expensive - and even more effective - than a humidifier.

Maybe a humidifier for you Jeni...sometimes you need to take care of yourself! I hope that Kurtis's allergies get taken care of, but if it is as dry in there as you say, I would definitely try the humidifier...or ask Dr. Oz!

If its not one thing its another! I say, take care of your own needs first, after all it IS your house...

Allergies....being an allergy sufferer I can sympathize with Kurtis...I am sure you already know this but more to just think about....carpet....carpet is one of the worst things for allergies...cigarette smoke...awful...my hubby after seeing me have an attack goes outside all time to have his smoke...however even the lingering smoke on his clothes sometimes can trigger me to cough....dust and dust mites....frequent dusting with a damp cloth and washing of his bed linens in hot water helps minimize allergens....no stuff animals...dust collectors....and as far as air humidifiers....I have two are purifiers...different from the humiditifers....it filters the air and takes out allergens...I have a large one in my bedroom and one in my office...it does help. Oh and you can always you a nasal rinse...warm salt water clears the nasal passages...Kurtis might think it cool to feel the water go in one nostril and come out the other....cheap entertainment and it does the trick...

As for SIL....well as long as it doesn't have direct impact to you then continue to do what it is you do...but once it affects you disucssions should take place.

No family is perfect by any means...we all have our ups and downs and issues...I hope resolve is found in your house...

hugs my friend...

A vaporizer is a good thing. I know it helps me when I have allergy issues! Hope you get it figured out.

I agree with smalltown RN and think that an air purifier would benefit everyone in the house. Good luck, my friend!

maybe you need some humidity and maybe it's a food allergy.

Looks to me like it's been pretty well covered, with the possible exception of SIL. Good luck with that.

Ah winter when you can't open the windows but so desperately want/need to! Sounds like everyone is right and an air purifier may very well be in order.

And as for dilemmas, they do make the world go round and give us something to blog about, don't they?

Would it be OK if the dehumidifier was just in the kids room and no wher else?

What about a bowl of water on the radiator?
