Pictures at the Park!

Well, Blogger cooperated with me in posting the videos of the Irish Step Dancers who entertained people at the Children's Fair in Bellefonte last Saturday, so I figured I would give it a go to see if it will continue to behave and allow me to post some of the pictures -maybe even a "ride" video of our day yesterday at DelGrosso's over by Tyrone, PA!

I'm still celebrating what a great day it was and how much both the kids really did enjoy themselves! Only one meltdown the entire day there with Maya and it was actually a very minor, very small one. Really incredible.

By the way, some of the other children on these pictures are classmates of Maya's but I am not identifying any of them here. Mainly because I would like people to see -and hopefully understand a bit better -that many -maybe even most -autistic individuals don't look any different from the majority of other folks.

They are children, teens, adults who have a learning disorder and some do have other issues or physical problems as well, but even so, they are all people, have feelings like everyone else and many of them also know and understand more than those around them realize too.

Don't judge them because they are different. Judge them as the beautiful individuals each one of them is, will be too someday.

And please, if someone says their child or grandchild is autistic, don't just assume that the person will never be able to learn, to read, to speak, to ride a bike, to go to college, to be self-sufficient and many, many more things that often are just taken for granted.

I don't say that and direct it at any of my regular readers as I have never had anyone post anything about my grandkids that wasn't loving and accepting and understanding of how wonderful they are, so don't think my above comments are directed at you. They are meant for those who don't know me, my grandkids, other individuals who have this disorder and most of the time, they just assume autism means the person can do nothing, is probably mentally challenged or physically deformed, etc. It just ain't so!

You, my regular readers, know and accept my posts, my pictures of Maya and Kurt, and many of you also have walked with me, watching them both learn - Maya especially -so much since I began this blog. You've all supported me, shown so much love, caring and consideration -and acceptance too -of them and just would like as many people as possible that I can reach to see the same things you see in them as I do -as their parents, aunts, uncles, other siblings and other grandparents do.

If these posts make a difference and help anyone along the way to understand this disorder, then I will be one really happy camper!

Maya on the little boat ride. She very much enjoyed this one -just like she did a year ago when we were at this park for my Dad's family reunion.
The elephant ride was the first one Mandy put Kurtis on and as you can see by his expression, initially he wasn't all too impressed with it.

The carousel was another big hit with Maya. I really love how pretty she looks in this picture!

This one, of me, holding Kurtis on the carosel -the way he was looking up at me, giving me such great eye contact here, is so neat to begin with and when you can really catch him in action doing that, means even more.

Maya and another little fellow sharing one of the racecars. Also a big hit with her.

Maya thoroughly enjoyed the elephant ride too though -much happier than her brother!

This was actually Maya's first ride of the day. Surprised me that she insisted on going on it as I wasn't sure how she would react to the spinning of these little cars.

Another picture of Kurtis and me on the carosel -which he very much liked.

Ah yes, Kurtis on the elephant ride again -and still frightened of it too!

But in the end, he calmed down and decided these little elephant things weren't all that scary after all!

Because the videos I took of the kids at the park all consist of watching a ride go around -basically -and if you've seen one kiddie ride going round and round and round, you've pretty much seen 'em all, haven't you? Therefore, I'm not going to try to post any of the park-ride videos. Some of them are very short -true enough, but others are like 2 minutes in duration and would take a long, long time to load them here too. That, plus blogger has also now decided to act up on me -again -and I really want to get to sleep sometime in this decade.

Sometimes, blogger just really aggravates the living daylights out of me, ya know!

Come, Dance Along With Me!

Here's a couple of little videos -not that great but not that long either -that I took last Saturday of the young girls performing Irish Step Dancing at the Children's Fair we attended in Bellefonte.

I really loved the music -as well as the form -of these kids and thought they did a darned fine job too. Even if my position didn't yield exactly the best vantage point for photographing them.

Let me know how well the videos come through on your end and if you could hear the music clear enough too. Just using my little Kodak digital camera on the video function ya know!

"Nekidness"

A friend of mine from a writer's group I belong to loves to toss words into his messages to the group at large that have a distinct flavor of the, shall we say, "hillbilly" south. One of them being that he uses the work "nekid" rather than spelling it correctly as "naked." And, I'm using his spelling here as a forewarning too that some aspects of this post may be found, well not necessary words that are used in mixed company and may dwell a bit on certain functions in life -necessary ones -but not usually spoken about really openly.

With that in mind, brace yourself, and I shall begin.

Those who have read my blog for any length of time will probably remember (I've mentioned this before I do believe) that I have had colo-rectal cancer -chemo, radiation, surgery, more chemo and for five years now, all has been well -remission I do believe, OK? I also had surgery two years after that for an obstruction in my right urinary tract. The surgery there did not remove the obstruction but rather just rewired things to route around it. Also, things there have been fine. And then about 20 months ago, due to issues with my intestines, I had a colostomy -something most people really DON'T talk about in mixed company. But I'm gonna break down that little boundary line tonight and tell you something about my day today that will necessitate mentioning bodily functions, etc., etc. Ok? You get the picture?

I had a doctor's appointment schedule for this afternoon -regular check-up, pap smear, preliminary breast exam prior to my next boobie crushing event. Mandy and the two little ones were out as Kurtis had his appointment for his weekly "Floortime" therapy and Mandy took Maya to eliminate any potential for meltdowns if she'd left the little princess behind.

I was getting ready to take my shower when they returned home. Just about to get in the tub really but first, I decided I best take care of some other "issues" shall we say -like emptying a specific part of the colostomy set-up.

Hearing Mandy and the kids coming in, I decided I'd best lock the bathroom door cause privacy in the bathroom in this house is virtually unheard of with Maya and Kurtis both running about. The only difference there being Kurtis just runs in and out, sees nothing out of the ordinary or strange about what we might be doing there whereas with Maya, you run the risk of having to play 20 questions. Knowing what I had to do, I envisioned if I didn't try to lock her out, I would be playing more like 60 questions and I really didn't have time for that. Nor do I always have reasonable explanations for her about those kind of questions either.

Because I was about to get into the shower (had the water all primed, running, etc.) I didn't flush the commode cause that would have caused my hot shower to run cold for a couple minutes. So I left things as they were.

Got in the tub, lathered, scrubbed, rinsed and was getting ready to take one last comfortable duck under the water stream when I heard noise in the bathroom -a voice. Oh Rats! She was in the bathroom as sometimes she can figure out how to get the door to unlock -usually when you least want that to happen too. So I started to hurry up to finish and then I heard her laughing -loudly -and proclaiming (also loudly) "Bye bye Grammy's poopie!" I grabbed at the spigot to turn the water off before I ended up getting a really icy blast but the whole time I was yelling to her "DON'T FLUSH THE COMMODE, MAYA! Please don't flush the commode!" Thankfully, I won in that I got the water turned off in time. Opened the shower door and she's standing there, just as pleased as punch over what she'd done. (Sheesh! If only she took as much pleasure in using that facility for her OWN bodily functions, ya know!)

Ok - moving along from that, got dried off, dressed, teeth brushed and ready to roll to the doctor's office.

Keep in mind today was just beautiful here -bright blue skies, sunshine, nice breeze, warmth with out extremes! Great weather.

Anyway, I got to the doctor's office and because of the examinations/tests, etc to be done today, they told me to strip. Yep! Everything off! Gave me one of those flimsy little cover-ups and told me to leave it open in the front.

I did as instructed, got up on the examining table and tried to sort of pull the edges of this gown together but they sort of didn't meet. Too much me and too little gown, ya know. So there I was, sitting on the examining table -yes, in all my nekidness (as my friend Gale would say), trying to take advantage of this brief time to polish off a few more pages in the Jodi Picoult book I am currently reading -"Songs of the Humpback Whales."

And then, suddenly, I was engulfed in pitch black DARKNESS!!! Couldn't see a thing!

I could hear the doctor, the nurses, the physician's assistant all running up and down the hall outside the examining room and talking nervously about "check the breakers" -do this, do that. I'd already figured there was a power outage. Yeah, duh! Kind of smart that way every now and again.

After about five minutes, my doctor stuck her head in the door and apologized to me for the delay but apparently there was this power outage, ya know. Not a problem, I say. Stuff like this does happen from time to time around here -probably in your neck of the world too, it's fair to say. Didn't bother me -not really -other than I was thinking this was a heck of a way to ruin my chances of getting a few more pages read in my book. The Doctor mentioned too that she would leave the door cracked open a bit as there was some light in the hallway outside there coming in from the windows in her office -that nice natural sunshine. Then she added to me that it was safe too because there wasn't a male in the building. Not that I was worried if there had been one and if he would have peeked in the room cause he wouldn't have been able to see a thing since it was still pretty dark in there and besides that, I was sitting behind a pulled curtain and also, can't forget, I had that lovely little -very little -examining gown on too ya know!

After about ten minutes more, the doctor came back in and said it looked like I'd have to reschedule my checkup cause they had no idea at all what had caused the blackout in their building but it appeared they weren't the only place affected by it either. Seems the bank next door was without power too because their clock/thermometer thing out front had quit functioning too. So I got dressed in the dark -not so dark that I couldn't find my clothes ya know -but yes, it was dark. No big deal there either.

Went to leave and the receptionist said I was to reschedule for my appointment and then it dawned on her she couldn't do that for me either because their schedule maker is on their computer -of course - and no power, no computer, no scheduling and to me, no big deal either. I told her when the power comes back up, just set me up for another visit and call me with the date and time and off I went.

Apparently there had either been an accident -perhaps someone hit a pole, knocked a transformer out or something or who knows, could have been a power overload on the system too for that matter.

But for me, it was just a kind of fun way to end my visit today at my doctor's office.

Yes, I lead such an exciting life that I blog about sitting naked in a dark -very dark -doctor's office and tell you all about other bodily functions of mine as well.

Ain't it all just grand though?

And yes, I am feeling much, much better EVERY DAY too now since my ordeal on Sunday with the darned diverticulitis. (HINT here: Keep your system running smoothly -fiber, fiber, fiber -and lots of water too so you can avoid a lot of the problems I've had over the past five years and the last couple of days.) And the meds I think are also curing a lot of other ailments that were lying just below the surface to - not bad enough to make me really ill but just enough to make me not feel "right" -lots of lethargy, a bit (understatement some days on this) of depression here and there and in general, just feeling really braindead. So much so that for quite some time I couldn't think of anything I felt was of interest to write about and today, my mind was swimming with all kinds of topics.

Yeah right and what do I decide on -well, now you know cause you just read it, didn't ya?

Peace!

And may you all have smooth sailing!

Great Day!

Today was really an exceptional day for my grandkids, Mandy and me!

We went over the mountain, towards Altoona, to the DelGrosso Amusement Park, located in Tipton, PA. (That's right outside of Tyrone.)

The reason for this trip was because today was a picnic sponsored by Cen-Clear, the agency that supplies all the therapists that Maya had and that Kurtis is being seen by now, plus they run the school program over near Clearfield that Maya has been attending since last September.

And, I'm here to tell you that we ALL -kids, Momma and Grandma alike -had a fantastic time!

I was kind of leery about going, considering the events earlier this week with my health and also, that the antibiotics I am taking are supposed to be pretty strong, also can be a bit tricky too according to my doctor. She warned me that the one in particular can often cause issues of nausea, upsetting the apple cart a little lower in the digestive tract, severe headaches, blurred vision -a whole host of nasty little things ya know. Plus, the directions sheet I received with them also said to avoid any type of steady contact with bright sun, etc. Sheesh! I prayed all winter for warm, sunny days and now, I can't enjoy 'em. Gimme a break here will ya!

Well, I have been lucky thus far in that I've had no side effects to either prescription but I will say this much, I did try my ever-loving best to stay in the shade whenever possible and I also did something else I'm not usually inclined to do too. I carried around a bottle of water that Mandy had stashed away in the freezer and sucked on that every chance I got. (I'm not normally all that much into water swigging, ya see. Coffee is generally my drink of choice -or maybe iced tea.) But anyway, I did try to follow through on the instructions my doctor gave me and that the brochure said would probably work better too in tandem with the meds.

Obviously, since I'm posting this now, everything came together, worked out fine and I'm feeling great tonight and way, way better than earlier this week. Still have some little bits of pain and tenderness in the abdomen but nothing near like it was. No sirree Bob! Not. At. All!

Maya hit the ground running at the park as she flitted from one kiddy ride to another, expressing her wishes to ride this, ride that and ride she did! Even little Kurtis managed to ride several of the kiddy rides too and for the most part, he did quite well. Only had a couple of little spells where he bucked completely about riding or was a little scared initially. Mandy and I were both so proud of each of the kids. It was truly an awesome sight to watch them enjoying the park, just having so much fun.

Between Mandy and I manning my lovely little Kodak digital camera, we came home with numerous photos and quite a few little videos of the kids on this ride or that one. Much as I would love to show you each and every picture and all those videos, I'm not gonna do that. Well, not all of them, not tonight, anyway. You'd be here till the cows come home watching little videos ranging from 10 seconds up to close to 3 minutes of little boats or cars or airplanes or flying fish, traveling in a circle and every so many seconds, you get a glimpse of Maya or Kurtis having so much fun.

But I have to tell you this too. While watching my sweet little grandkids being entertained so well, often I would find my self smiling or even cracking up laughing at them and at the same time, feeling that I also wanted to cry too. It was so wonderful to see them at their finest and their highest level of enjoyment -one of those kind of sensations ya know - that it brought tears or nearly came to that with me. Kind of like how many of us get all teary-eyed seeing a bride as she comes down the aisle or recognizing a family member or close friend as they graduate too. Ok, I'm a sentimental slob and I freely admit to that but I'm betting many of your reading this react the same way as I do too! Am I right?

But something else struck me too. Since the Cen-Clear agency works with kids of a wide variety of ages and issues, as I watched our kids and others running around, just major smiles every where, it dawned on me that if those who don't know anything at all about these kids and their particular problems, odds are you would never be able to differentiate in most cases between which kids were autistic or ADD or ADDH or had other concerns based on their appearance, their exuberance in the day's activities.

Now, I know since the pictures I took all have either Kurtis or Maya in them - sometimes both of them -and those who have been reading here for any length of time are now pretty familiar with what my sweet babies look like so you know automatically then, ok -these two are autistic. But look at the other children in the photos too and tell me if you can discern what any of these other kids have that requires them being considered "special needs" kids. Betcha can't do it! I know I can only tell that two children in the photos I took are autistic like Kurtis and Maya and that is only because those two kids are members of Maya's class group!

And all I could think of because of not being able to see beneath the surface of all these other kids but seeing them, like Kurtis and Maya, just having a fantastic time, looking just like all other little kids of their particular age group, wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone could see the beauty that lies in each of these kids and not earmark them as being different simply because you KNOW there is something under the surface that requires special attention, therapy, special programs to enable these kids to reach their full potential in life?

And please, if you can, explain to me your logic there then too!

It was rather comical when we first arrived in the park that the first person we encountered who we knew was Pam, Maya's teacher. And Maya's reaction to seeing Pam was something that really startled all three of us - Mandy, Pam and me - as Maya immediately latched on to Mandy's leg and began crying on seeing Pam. This took all of us by surprise because we know Maya loves Pam, just adores her, often hangs on her every word, movement, etc. Why then would she seem fearful and begin to cry? We finally figured it must have been just that Maya didn't really understand who all would be there today and she was kind of taken aback at seeing Pam. By the time we left, Pam and her family were also the last people we saw and spoke to and then, it was a whole different story as Maya was her normal self with Pam then as she answered questions Pam asked her about what she'd done, how much fun she'd had and then, waved good bye to her like she would do any other given day.

When Maya spied a couple of the kids from her class, I wish you could have just seen how her eyes lit up -just sparkled. It was such a terrific feeling seeing her behave the way just about every other 4 1/2 year old would do upon seeing a friend, a comrade in arms, so to speak.

Well, my plans to post some photos and/or videos tonight have just been dumped. Not by me but apparently Blogger doesn't want me to share any of this stuff with you today with this post so just think of all the great pictures and videos you have to look forward to seeing sometime in the near future!

And, since Thursday -today or tomorrow -however you care to think of that day this week -is going to be another one filled with more running around as I have a doctor's appointment for a general check-up and some other tests (routine junk) with my family doctor, I'm gonna close this for tonight and head off to beddy-bye.

And with that, I wish you all a good night, good day, whatever the case may be.

A Long and Rocky Three Days!

Boy, I was beginning to think I would never get caught up on my blog readings! After three days of feeling very, VERY under the weather, not being up to sitting for any extended periods of reading, much less posting, since Sunday afternoon, I finally got through reading all the posts showing on my reader! But, at about 2:45 this morning, I finally completed the task -to my great relief. I decided to celebrate this accomplishment by getting a shower and then, being relaxed, I could sit down and write a bit.

The reason for my being under-the-weather began Sunday afternoon shortly before Mandy, Maya and I left the baby shower we were attending for the young lady who was Maya's speech therapist and who now works with Kurtis on his speech issues. After three years of having her come into our home for a hour every week, she has become much more than just the kids' speech therapist but if more like another member of our family. Mandy and I think she's a miracle worker, Kurtis perks up as soon as he sees her, hears her voice and Maya simply adores her! So anyway, just before we were leaving the shower, I started to get these cramping sensations in my abdomen. Thinking it was no big deal -this happens every now and again -we started for home -about a 35 minute drive -and that drive was basically 35 minutes of pure torture as the cramps intensified and seemed to just stay as one huge pain, about the equivalent to having one 35-minute labor pain that never let up. (Picture that one, will ya!)

By the time we got home and I made a visit to the bathroom, Mandy came in asking me if I was sick to my stomach. My answer then was "No, not yet, anyway." But five minutes later, that was a lie as the nausea hit, big time. I know what was on Mandy's mind too as I could read the worried expression on her face. She was remembering what my surgeon in Pittsburgh had told me when I was down there about a month ago for a check up because of the hernia I have. His parting words to me that day were that if I got really intense pains and nausea to call him immediately and head for Pittsburgh.

Now this was the absolute last thing either of us wanted to happen -not then, not ever, for that matter as it would mean emergency surgery to repair the hernia and who knows what else might follow after that.

After emptying the contents of my stomach (wasting all that good food from the baby shower, ya know) I did start to feel a little better except the pain in my side and much of my abdomen didn't go away. I told Mandy to call a family friend of ours who is an LPN but who also had dealt with issues similar to mine for nine years prior to her husband's death as he too had a colostomy from colo-rectal cancer. Kaye came down, talked to both of us, and when she was fairly certain I seemed to be feeling a trifle better, she left. While she was there though, my neighbor and long-time friend down the street -also an RN -called because Mandy had also called her for advice too! I did call the surgeon in Pittsburgh, reached to on-call surgeon for that day and explained to him what happened. I told him I really thought maybe this was all because of a combination of issues from the extreme heat plus I may have also overloaded my digestive tract with a lot of foods (some that I don't eat all that often) and the two had worked my system into a major uproar. He felt that from what I told him the colostomy was still functioning at that point, recommended I call my regular physician in the morning and also, contact my regular surgeon too.

So Monday morning, bright and early, my son (who had just gotten home from his latest trucking run) took me to see my doctor. The neat thing about that was that he needed to take the truck over to Clearfield to park in and pick up his car there so I got delivered "in style" to the doctor's office in the cab of a big semi! Not exactly the most comfortable ride - a lot of bouncing around -in a truck cab like that but at least it had air conditioning plus being able to listen to his Sirius radio in the cab too! Ok, you make the best of every situation don't you?

The doctor checked me over and had her staff schedule me to have a CAT scan then Tuesday morning - also really bright and early too. (I'm not too fond of all this "bright and early morning" stuff you know.) About noonish on Tuesday, my doctor called to tell me she had received a call from the radiologist about my CAT scan which she said revealed I am the beneficiary of a major dose of diverticulitis! The remedy was that she called in two antibiotic prescriptions for me which Mandy's sister-in-law picked up for me and I got the first two doses of this stuff circulating in my system around 6 p.m. and by 8 p.m., I could feel the pain starting to disappear from my left quadrant of my abdomen! Talk about miracle drugs -those really seem to be just that to me! So now, I still have some discomfort but nothing like what I had Sunday and all day Monday and all night last night too! Still have to contact my surgeon though in Pittsburgh, on the advice of my doctor here as she feels he needs to see me sooner than my checkup originally not scheduled until October!

Now, that's my reason - not an excuse -but my reason for being so far behind this week, already!

Since Friday, when I posted about the snake visiting the front stoop of the house and disappearing behind the maple tree into the rock retaining wall there, we've had more little creatures trying to invade our space here.

Monday morning, Mandy was sleeping on the sofa because since I wasn't feeling quite up to par, she felt she needed to do that in case Kurtis decided to raise the roof -plus, the living room was just slightly -maybe all of five degrees cooler than the upstairs bedrooms when Bill came downstairs, carrying Maya, who was crying, frightened and very upset. She had begun crying and screaming -loud enough that it woke her dad up, which is somewhat of a miracle because Mandy and I both believe Bill could sleep through an earthquake of an 8.0 caliber on the Richter scale if one ever took place here in central PA. He deposited Maya on her nap-pad she has here in the living room and then explained to Mandy what happened when he went to check on Maya.

She was sitting in her bed, screaming "Black bird in my bed," Black bird gonna get me," and "Black bird gonna eat my feet." Turns out the black bird she was talking -or screaming about - was a darned bat flying around her room and scaring the living daylights out of the poor kid. It took a while for Mandy to get her calmed down and back to sleep but at least she wasn't afraid to go back up to bed tonight and so far, no nightmares either from the event.

Later on Monday afternoon, we had company here too. I'd known all weekend these guests were going to be coming by and it was something I'd really been looking forward to so I was determined too that I was going to be able to visit with them for a while. The guests were a nephew of my oldest uncle -by marriage -his wife, their son, another great-nephew of my uncle, his wife and their daughter. Now the first three -Mel, Mary Ann and Eric Gustafson -had come all the way out here from Phoenix to visit family and friends in Pennsylvania, Maryland and New York and when I learned what day they would be here, in this area, I had e-mailed the other family who live in Carlisle, PA to see if maybe they would be able to slip away on Monday and come up to meet their cousins. Luck was with me on that idea as Rev. Dan Nagle, his wife and their daughter just happened to be returning Monday from visiting their older daughter in Mentor, Ohio and would be coming across I-80 to return home and they were going to be able to stop by and visit then too. What was really neat about this whole thing was the fact that 1) Dan had never before met his cousins, Mel and his son, Eric much less Mel's wife and 2) it was the very first time Dan had ever been here - to big old Grassflat - the village he'd heard so much about all his life and 3) it was the first time I'd seen Dan in well over 50 years!

Dan's grandmother and my uncle were sisters and they lived in Jamestown, NY where I also lived with this particular aunt (my Mom's older sister) and her husband for a little over a year when I was between 7 and 8 years old plus, I had spent at least a month, sometimes more than that, every summer from 1952 until I graduated from high school with that particular aunt and uncle in Jamestown so I had come to know my uncle's siblings, nieces and nephews all quite well during those years.

Here's a picture of us in front of the house as they were preparing to leave.
From left to right: Donna and Dan Nagle, Eric Gustafson, me, Maya, Mary Ann and Mel Gustafson. (Dan's daughter, Meridith took the photo of us, using my camera.) I have to confess I was not feeling all too shiny, fighting both the pains of the diverticulitis and the intense heat too -sat in the house talking while they were here while holding ice packs to my head and back to thwart as much of the heat issues off me as I could. I felt really remiss too in that I wasn't up to fixing some type of beverage and snack - kind of a tradition generally within my family when company stops by -but all the problems aside, it was such a nice and fun-filled visit to see Mel, Mary Ann and Eric again (I'd seen them a year ago when they were here) and to finally get to see Dan after so many years and meet his wife and one of their daughters -along with their dog, "Padre" too! (Kurtis, by the way, really enjoyed Padre -who seems to thrive on being around people of all ages but especially little children -and Kurt was playing under the dining room table with the dog every chance he got! The only one not really impressed with the dog's presence was -naturally - good old Jorge, our mama cat!)

And, since I mentioned the Mama cat, here's something else for your viewing pleasure too -some pictures of these four little kittens. If anyone is interested in a really cute little kitten, they should be ready for adoption in oh, about 4-6 weeks I would imagine. Just leave your name in the comments section if you're up for that!
Here's the best picture Mandy got of the four of the babies, all lined up but of course, wouldn't you just know it, typical of little kids and babies, one of 'em always has to look away from the camera just as Mandy snapped this picture!

This one, below here, is the one who is the fattest of the brood and Mandy and I just call her "Chubster!" She's such a little cutie, don't you think?

Then there's this cute little tiger baby. Don't you just love the pleading look -like, please take me home with you?

Here's the smaller of the two grey kittens -this one is the cry baby of the lot but still so sweet and lovable too.

And, last but not least, here's the other tiger -I love the markings on the face of this kitten!

And finally -here's another picture of the chubby one that Mandy and I both just thought was such a cute picture of her! Now, who can possibly resist such cute little furry babies like these? I know, I know -lots of people can but we're hoping that at least four families will come forward and open their hearts and homes to welcome one of these charmers into their lives! Actually, the last anyone here reported in on potential adopters, it appeared that we might already have four homes ready, willing and able - much to the 16-year-old's chagrin, as she's been insisting all along that we HAVE to keep one of 'em! To which I say if there's someone waiting at the door with open arms, the kitten goes with them, doesn't stay here and Mama's gonna have an appointment as soon as possible with the nice doctor to make sure she never gets saddled with raising a family of four (or more!!! maybe) ever again! Yeah, I'm turning into a regular scrooge now aren't I?

But anyway, there's the latest report on the kittens, a run-down of my great visitors yesterday and I'm gonna leave you now with some pictures of Maya, taken on Saturday at the Children's Fair over in Bellefonte -complete with her ladybug face painted sweet little face! Actually, I lied - this picture of Maya was taken on Sunday at the baby shower - but she still had the face painting ladybug on her cheek and was so proud of it - showing it off whenever and where ever she could!

Here's Maya, standing in line with Mandy to get to play in one of those bubble things where the kids can just jump and play, have a good time. We weren't sure how Maya would do with this at first, but once she got in there and got accustomed to it, she had a great time.

And here's Kurtis, enjoying his balloon he got at the fair too! He seemed to enjoy seeing all the people and lots of little kids at the Fair too! So, a good time was had by all, you could say!

I have a couple little videos I took at the fair too of a group of girls who performed Irish Step Dancing but I just don't have time - or enough energy now this morning (or night -whatever you care to call this hour) to wait for old Blogger to load any of them so I'll have to save them and share them, hopefully, in my next post! These kids were really terrific though and was so neat to watch them perform!

Later, my friends!

Staying Au Courrant!

With the idea in mind of not getting way behind on my blogging duties and just in case when I get home this afternoon from the baby shower Mandy, Maya and I are going to for the kids Speech Therapist (also named Mandy,) I fold up completely like an old accordion, I thought I'd be best served to do my Bushisms post now! Prepare, plan ahead, ya know.

A Little Review

I've been thinking about this lately and realized it's been some time since I posted any pictures of the kids -aside from those the other night after my older grandson's band concert. And, with that in mind, I thought I'd share a couple pics of the kids tonight then.

Here then is one of Maya, taken back towards the end of April. It was early in the morning and is her, all ready to head out to school for the day. I just love this little outfit -she looks so darned cute in those green stripe stretchy pants with the matching green shirt to go with it. (She is, by the way, quite the fashion conscious little lady too. Very much like her Aunt Carrie in that respect.)
When Maya was about 9-10 months old, a cousin of mine sent her a gift via her sister, who brought it to Maya at our family reunion that year. It was actually a pillow case (or could be used as a pajama bag too -whatever) and it was in the form of a really pretty, very, very soft plushy white bunny with the biggest and floppies ears ever. Maya loved it, played with it a lot in her playpen, often snuggled up with it -along with her special yellow hand-crocheted blanket that she still often needs to take with her - to bed.

When Maya was about 20 months old, Mandy and Maya and I had taken a weekend trip down to Burke, Virginia where cousin Bea and her mother, Grandma Ruthie, live. While there, we went over to Silver Spring and met up with Bea's sister, brother-in-law and nephew (Rita, David and Jonathon) at the IKEA store there. Along with having a really great lunch there and having lots of fun looking at all the displays, Mandy found another pillow type item and bought it for Maya. This one is sort of a bear -has a bear's face on the pillow part in the center and is shaggy-furry. Maya also liked it a lot too. But both of these items are part of the things that Kurtis also loves. He will snuggle up to the bunny at times but the bear -well it has become a very important part of his belongings! He will carry it around the house, along with his bottle, looking for a good spot to plop the bear down and then, he sits in front of it and gradually lowers his head onto the bear's head for his special comfort zone when polishing off a bottle. (If he's in the playpen, he will go through this same procedure of having the bear in a specific position and then, he lays down with his head just very slightly elevated with the pillow portion of the bear's body.

But there is something else he likes to do with the bear pillow toy too! It's become his "security" toy and as such, when he is trying to calm himself, getting ready to go to sleep sometimes, he will sit in the playpen, hold the bear and then -just like monkeys "groom" each other, he will finger the fur on the bear, sort of one strand at a time. We call this process "Kurtis counting the bear's furs." Here below is a picture of him doing that with his special bear.

Here's Maya in her version of how to best apply makeup. Yes, she's still quite the little artist.
And here's some of her fairly recent art work in the living room too. New designs on the cushions of the loveseat ala Maya. Aren't these just lovely though?

This one below was taken this past Sunday -when I was going to take the two kids for a walk at Mandy's request. Actually, she offered me $5.00 if I would take them both for a walk -together -to get them out of her hair, away from her feet and so they would stop badgering her, fighting with each other and then, bawling while she was trying to clean the living room!

This afternoon, when Maya got home from school, Mandy had made plans to take her down to Milesburg to meet up with "Aunt Carrie" (my older daughter) and Maya is spending the night tonight then with Aunt Carrie and Uncle Robert. Being the sweet people we are, Mandy and I were encouraging Maya's singing on the way down there, having her sing as many of the little songs she knows so that she will be well-versed in them and can sing them for Uncle Robert especially, tonight. (Uncle Robert is just a tad on the OCD side at times and having a mouthy four-year-old for roughly 24 hours is liable to send him fully over the edge.)

But anyway, here's Miss Maya ready to hop out of my van and go over to get into Aunt Carrie's Vehicle. In the background, you can see a little of Kurtis being carried around the parking lot there at McDonald's. During the ride down there, Maya had on a lavendar fleece type ski cap and matching finger gloves too -same deal as last night when we had to go into Philipsburg to the CVS pharmacy there and she had insisted on wearing the hat and gloves. Hotter than Hades and she comes dressed practically for winter but in the winter, it's like pulling teeth to get a hat and gloves on her and keep them there! Go figure! But evidently by the time we got to Milesburg today, she had decided that the weather was much more conducive to wearing this little springy number instead of the fleece. Wise choice, my dear!

Here's Kurtis, getting a little extra spoiling and attention too this afternoon from Aunt Carrie.

Mandy picked up a happy meal at McDonald's for the kids and sent her off with hers when she left with Aunt Carrie. We had decided we were going to stop over at the Plaza (the truckstop restaurant there where I used to work) and take advantage of their Friday night buffet -with the salad bar, fish, shrimp, scallops, baked chicken breasts, stuffed cabbage rolls and the Plaza's really good, lip-smacking BBQ ribs! Mandy got the happy meal for Kurtis though figuring it contained items she knew he would eat without too much ruckus.

Well, you know those happy meals all come with a little toy of some type or other -usually representing a character from some recent Disney movie or some such. The toy in his happy meal today is some kind of little mouse-like figure holding something -maybe a large flashlight or a weapon of some sort -and of course, you wind it up and it runs across the surface. So, after we were finished eating, Mandy got this toy out and decided to spring it on Kurtis to see how he would react to it. Unfortunately, I wasn't quick enough with my flash to get a shot of the toy and I probably really should have thought to use the video feature on the camera which would have shown Kurtis looking off in space, kind of dreamily, until Mandy set this mouse thing down on the booth top and his little head swiveled around just like he was in "The Exorcist" or something! He let out a shriek like a little banshee and in the picture, you can see his arm is extended -actually it was flailing about, giving Mandy a very strong message to get that damned thing away from him. If I'd caught the toy on the picture too I would have labeled this shot as "Get thee behind me, Satan!" cause that was pretty much what he really wanted done with that little sucker, ya know!

So there you have it - pretty much up-to-the minute pictures -well, some of 'em anyway -of my two little grandkids here. They're both a couple of cuties for sure, but both of them can be more than a little tempermental at times too!

At the restaurant tonight, shortly after we started eating, two couples came in and sat in the booth behind us. Kurtis was making a lot of noise at the time but not fussing, just his genial side showing through doing a lot of babbling. Mandy saw the one lady look over at Kurtis as he was squealing over something and Mandy apologized to her for the extra noise from him. THe lady was quite gracious, telling Mandy it was fine and was also obvious that he was having a very good time too. Which, at that time, he was.

However, by the time we were ready to leave, he was really READY to leave! Not a very happy camper by then and his fussing -also at a higher decibel level -was more than noticable. As we walked past these two couples I leaned down to the one lady and said "Well, you've seen both sides of him now - the Dr. Jeckyl and also, Mr. Hyde." To which the lady and her friends all just laughed. By the time we got him moving towards the door, he had settled down quite well though!

Just another episode in dealing with a two-year-old autistic child who doesn't talk and who has very little by way of communication skills. And you all know too don't you, I wouldn't trade him for all the tea in China -nor his sister either! Both of 'em are just "Gram's babies!"

Peace.

Rats!

So, here it is -the last day of school finally arrived. Maya left peaceably this morning for her last day as did Kate. Maya has a "full day" today (won't be home till 3 p.m., her normal time) whereas Kate's day amounted to maybe two hours of socializing, getting phone numbers, e-mail addys, my space accounts more than likely. Something I suspect she spends more time getting during the normal school day too though but on the last day, well ya know, priorities and you have to be well stoked for the summer with people you can correspond with and communicate to and fro don't 'cha?

So anyway, due to several sleep interruptions last night, I slept rather late today -didn't get up till a little after 11 a.m. As I waltzed through the living room, enroute to the bathroom, there's a bevy of teenage girls (ok, so there was only three) blocking my route as they were all hovering over something on the computer -someone's My Space" obviously.

On return from my bathroom visit, as I headed towards the kitchen for a cup of coffee that I hoped would help me to wake up, I noticed the girls quietly dispersed, went upstairs to Kate's room, without my having to say a word to anyone to order them out of my battered up computer chair and away from my portal here.

And so it began - my reading the stuff I try to read every day -other people's blogs!

Mandy is babysitting today - has her sister-in-law's baby girl here. Carlea is a little cutie pie -about six months old now and just a smiling, sweet little thing she is too. Kurtis, on the other had, is not overly friendly to her as he sees her as an interloper, moving in on HIS turf, taking valuable attention time from his mother away from him and sliding it over to his little cousin.

But anyway, things were moving along fairly quietly. Carlea asleep in her carseat and Kurtis nodding off for what I was hoping would be a nice, early, afternoon nap. The teens had made their way back downstairs and were heading out to go up to Kate's Mom's house when suddenly Kate hollers out for Mandy, announcing that there is a snake on our front door step.

"WHAT?" That was me! Trying to keep any panic out of my voice too ya know. (I hate, absolutely loathe, abhor and despise snakes, any kind, you name it and I am also terrified of them too -poisonous or not.) Mandy, it so happened, was out in the backyard hanging up clothes so she didn't hear Kate's announcement.

I got up wandered out to the front porch where all three girls were gathered around the front door -well, actually only two of them were by the door as the third one it seems is maybe just a tad more afraid of snakes than I am and she was hanging back by the dining room doorway, trying NOT to view the snake.

Yep! There is was too -in all its slinky, slithery glory - a nice big long old black snake just slowly dragging itself across the concrete doorstep in front of the doorway. It was making its way into the flower bed there and suddenly it dawned on me -HEY! This could make for some good blog material and maybe even get some pictures to go along with it, to prove this entity had been nervy enough to invade our space, come this close to humans, etc. etc. etc.

Jorge (the Mama cat) was beside herself wanting to be let outside and Kate was moving her foot back and forth trying to blockade it so the cat wouldn't escape the second the front door was opened too. I mentioned letting Jorge out as she would probably tussle with the snake and maybe even kill it but that terrified Kate as she was afraid the snake would bite Jorge and after all, "You can't risk that, she's a Mama, she has babies to feed ya know!" Yes, Kate actually thought of that! Surprised the heck out of me that one did ya know!

So I came into the living room, reached up on the shelf above my computer for my sweet little camera and came away empty handed. Drat! Looking around the desktop (the actual one, not the computer one, ya know) and through the rubble that calls my desktop home, no camera was to be found. Then I thought I remembered having seen it out in the kitchen maybe yesterday on the counter there -which meant Mandy had been using it -so I meandered out there but couldn't locate it. Hmmm. Maybe she had put it back in my purse or maybe I had done that and had forgotten about it so I found my purse, but no camera. Ok, desperate times call for desperate actions and I called out to Mandy then asking if she knew where it was.

"Yeah. It's on the counter, off to the left side of the coffee maker." Yeah, looked there but had to lift about ten or fifteen papers up before I finally located my camera and headed back to try to get a snapshot of this slithering beast in my front yard.

However, by the time I finally found the camera and got back to the door, the snake had made its way across the front yard, behind the maple tree and apparently slunk itself then in between the rocks of the rock wall Bill had erected in the front of the yard to hold the dirt that composes our parking area in so it doesn't all wash out and down into the yard every time it rains!

By this time, the girls left then -figured it was safe to walk up the sidewalk to the road. Mandy had come back inside and I told her, showed her where the snake had been visiting and pointing out to her where we believed it had gone to hide out now too. I reminded Mandy then -figure I'll let HER explain this to Bill -about how there is this door in the back of the house that goes into the basement and how some people within the family have a tendency to go in and out of that entry way with no regard to being sure to close the door tightly then too. I also reminded here that a few years back we had evidently had a snake get into the house where it at least shed its skin on the ledge above and behind the furnace and had been found when the guy who used to do all the repairs on my furnace and wiring and such was doing some work here one day and he had to run his hand across that ledge and found the snake's skin. Funny thing about that is that he is much like me and is also terrified of snakes too!

So here's hoping maybe now Bill will remember to tightly close the damned cellar door behind him when he uses that entry way. It's doubtful but I can hope, dream, can't I? And don't anyone bother now to tell me how nice, loveable and useful black snakes are too -I DON'T CARE!

The only good snake in my book -is a DEAD ONE!

And that brings me back now to the title of this post.

RATS! Something that exciting -a live critter -in my front yard, on my doorstep no less -and I missed getting a photo of it because my dear sweet daughter didn't put my camera back in my regular hiding place for it!

Let that be a lesson now for one and all to Always Put Things Away, where they belong!

Boy, David McMahon would be so chiding me I bet for not having my camera at hand -at all times - wouldn't he?

Dona Nobis Pacem

Two years ago, Mimi of Mimi Writes began this blog event which has grown by leaps and bounds and now has people around the globe participating, flying our peace globes, each of us posting today for PEACE, sweet, wonderful, pure, peace!

Here's the banner each of us taking part in this great event will be flying today - along with our own personal peace globes as well.

And here are my words for this auspicious day! Written in the hope if even one person reads it and decides to follow suit, it has been successful.

“Let There Be Peace on Earth” –words and music by Sy Miller and Jill Jackson in 1987.

That’s what it says in the United Methodist Hymnal that had belonged to my late aunt –the one whose Hammond organ I acquired when she passed away this past April.

I don’t know why, but I was thinking this was a much more recent song but I suppose the way my mind works these days, something that is 21 years old doesn’t seem that long ago to me I guess.

There is something about this particular song though –I love both the words as well as the melody but it is the idea behind the words that really reach out to me –gives so much impact, I believe.

Let’s look at the words:

“Let there be peace on earth.” How simple a sentence and what a wonderful request that sentence is too. Doesn’t everyone wish that were a reality though? Don’t we all start and end our day with some type of a request along those lines? Whether one is waking up, showering, dressing and getting ready to head off to the world of work, or facing the day with a couple of small children in tow –or especially, if one is in an area torn by war, starvation, slavery, strife of all the terrible types we recognize, wouldn’t that be your opening thought?

And wouldn’t it also be the last thought in your mind, as you drift off to sleep at the end of the day too?

“And let it begin with me.” How simple a statement that is and yet, it is one that few seem able to follow. Whether that peace is something like “No yelling,” or “Stop hitting each other” –whether that be addressed to disciplining children, dealing with the general public in the workplace, or to combatants in the battlefield –if only each of us could say that phrase and have it have a really positive impact.

”Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be.” The idea of having peace and quiet –no fighting –no children squabbling, no teens muttering smart aleck comments to parents, teachers, others; no couples grousing about trivial things, money, jealousies, anger and no others stomping through one’s life, taking ownership of things that are not theirs, no people afraid to go outside their homes for fear of being robbed, for fear of being raped, for fear of being maimed in one way or another, no hatred of others because of their skin color, body features, ethnicity, sex, gender or especially because of their faith. Aren’t all those things which so many of us fear could or will possibly bring us harm and which are things that are such basic elements to co-existence that to have them denied, stolen, trampled makes a peaceful existence virtually impossible to attain.

“With God our creator, children all are we.” Regardless of one’s age –infant, child, teen, adult, senior citizen –yes, we are all children and children of God too –regardless what name you call that entity that is the “Higher Power” of life.

“Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony.” Once again, such a simple statement and yet, so many who refuse to even try to do that, who feel the need to brutalize others in their attempt to bring happiness into living.

“Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now.” Let me show by an example to others, let each person do the same, extend a helping hand, greet people with care, kindness and love –what could it hurt? Better yet, how much could it help? Think of it as each of us taking that one little step in that direction, with the billons of people on this planet, each walking in the same direction of kindness to family, friends, acquaintances and yes, even to perfect strangers as all being the same would leave no time then for plundering others belongings, for brutalities, for killings, for war.

“With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow.” Start small, move forward with each stride being a little longer, reach out, smile, speak, share, understanding will follow.

“To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally.” See how simple this really could be? Truly, it could happen you know.

“Let there be peace on earth.” What a wonderful, blessed thing this could be.

“And let it begin with ME!”

We all have to do this. Really we do. And there is nothing standing in our way either –if each one does this, does the same thing.

What’s so difficult about that anyway?

Look around at those who are already a part of our lives – children, siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, and friends –each person who enters into our lives, our surroundings and simply remember the Golden Rule – Do Unto Others As We Would Have Others Do Unto Us –and then take action on that.

If someone does something that is offensive, and if we retaliate by being offensive in return, what is the end result? A continuation of the offensive actions, as others become a part of the action and reaction syndrome does nothing but create more struggles, more strife, more hatred.

But, if each of us does something nice, is kind, thoughtful, generous, understanding, caring – thinking along the lines of how each of us would want to be treated and then acting on those thoughts – a simple smile, a light pat on the shoulder, a hug, a helping hand where needed –can eradicate the wrong, the evil, the tragedies that are inflicted by man’s hand on others – and change each little corner of the world in which we live, piece by piece, step by step, day by day into the world we would all be able to see for the glory, the beauty, the awesomeness around us.

Try it! What can be lost by trying anyway? Nothing.

What can be gained? Everything!!!!

And so, today –and everyday –I will try to do my part, to help where I can, to extend a hand in friendship, a word of encouragement whenever possible –and if I fail one day, to come back the next day and try harder to abide by this principle.

Prayers for peace are wonderful and also something that costs nothing to give. But to make those prayers become a reality, each of us must take it one step further and do it –really try one person at a time –to “LET IT BEGIN WITH ME!”

In Peace.

It's that time again! Time for the first Blog Blast for Peace of 2008, an idea that Mimi of Mimi Writes brought into being two years ago now.

I'm posting two things for the Blog Blast for Peace. This is the first part and it is a you tube video from a song in the movie "Juno." Listen closely to the words if you will -be aware too there is some "blue" vocabulary so you might not want to watch/listen to this if there are younger people, or even older ones who are very sensitive to certain words.

But the song, and the words, "We won't stop until they tell us to" -and then, "We'll do it all over again." I think tell so much about a peace movement that goes back well beyond when even Mimi began this campaign on the Internet to push for peace.

And, that's exactly what we will all do -until such time as minds and directions are changed and people begin to live in harmony.

Peace!

"Loose Lips"

Recapping Things

It's been a bit of busyness the past couple of days here.

On Saturday, Mandy wanted to go down the mountain to a little store where they carry some items she likes but can't find at the bigger stores -mop heads! Yeah, imagine going shopping for one of those replacement heads for your mop at a gas station/outlet type store on a very small scale. But while there, I found a few things that I wanted too - among them lime juice concentrate, smallish bottles of olive oil so I wouldn't have to shell out a larger chunk of change by purchasing a larger bottle at the big chain stores, and some ice cream toppings - hot fudge and caramel -by Smuckers -and both priced at $1.00 a jar! Yep, I was very happy with my lot when I came across those items.

After leaving there, we were heading on down the mountain towards Milesburg when all of a sudden Mandy smacked the steering wheel with her hand, grumbling because she hadn't been paying attention and had zipped right on past the house where she had stopped last year and two years ago as well for their big yard sale. (She really likes this place because they apparently have a little girl just enough older than Maya that each year, Mandy can practically refurbish Maya's wardrobe from finds at this yard sale. And apparently they have a little guy too, also just enough older than Kurtis that he will fall in line now too for getting some nice "almost new" clothes. The really neat thing too is that these ladies price the kids clothing dirt cheap and almost all the items are big brand names of kids clothing as well!)

From there, we went on to the Plaza where I used to work and had a nice supper there. I tried one of their new items on the menu -an open-faced omelet, with lightly browned hash brown potatoes on it, topped with sausage gravy and slices of Polish sausage. Reading the description on the menu didn't really entice me but when the prep cook mentioned it to me, somehow it made the combination all seem more plausible so I decided to try it -my breakfast for supper meal - and was really glad I ordered it as it was quite tasty!

Sunday, I was the only one in the family who made it up and out the door for church services. Later in the day, when Maya realized it was Sunday, she was -again - quite put out because Mommy didn't get her up and they didn't go to church. She told Mandy "We not go at church" and at first Mandy thought she was just adding church to places she didn't want to go or things she thinks she doesn't want to do but then Mandy realized she actually was referring this in the opposite way and kind of chiding Mandy then because she had been derelict in her duties of waking Maya up, getting her bathed and dressed and out to services.

This is all such a change for us with Maya and attending church though and truthfully, I don't think either Mandy or I has fully become accustomed to the fact that Maya now enjoys attending church with us. Although we had taken her to church from the time she was only two weeks old and as she grew, she generally did fairly well, behaved at least half-decently for the first two and a half years. That is until Kurtis was a baby and we decided to attend a Thursday evening service with both the little ones in tow. That night, Maya had started to whine and fuss a bit when we pulled in the parking lot and she hadn't been all that happy about getting out of the van to go into church either. But that still didn't prepare us for how she acted that night! As soon as she set one little foot inside the narthex area of the church, she went into a massive meltdown! She threw herself on to the floor, laid there kicking like crazy and screaming -actually shrieking -like a little banshee and there was no way to get her to calm down so Mandy had ended up leaving Kurtis and I there at church and taking Maya back home. She then came back about an hour later to pick Kurtis and me up.

After that episode, anytime we drove by the church she would get upset and perish the thought of how she would carry on if we pulled into the parking lot. From May of 2006 until June of 2007, we took Maya to church with us once and that was only because we HAD to take her because it was the Sunday Kurtis was being baptized so all of the family wanted to be there. Well, it was a disaster, big time as Maya began to go into meltdown as soon as the bell rang! I didn't even wait to try to calm her down, just picked her up and went out to sit in the narthex behind the glass windows where I could at least watch most of the service. I did that while holding Maya in my lap, her clinging to me for dear life and sobbing, unrelentlessly, through the ENTIRE service! After that episode, I tried making excuses for things I had to run out to the church to pick up something or drop something off and would take her with me so I could take her inside the church and maybe show her, when it wasn't packed with worshipers, etc., that it really isn't a scary place.

But it wasn't until last June when Katie and a friend of hers had to participate in the Youth Group doing the service one Sunday that we were actually able to convince Maya to go to church with us -and behave like a semi-civilized little person too!

Since then, she has gotten better and better with each service we attend and actually looks forward to going church with us now. The next step will be to indoctrinate Kurtis into this procedure but that's going to take a lot more effort. So far, he doesn't have this massive fear, no meltdowns from that anyway, but his behavior leaves a lot to be desired right now. He doesn't understand words like "Quiet" -has no "inside voice" either AT ALL and sitting still for longer than 2 minutes unless he his wanting and willing to go to sleep, just isn't going to happen for a while yet I think.

But anyway, Sunday afternoon and into the evening, both kids were really on the obnoxious side with their behavior. Maya was really enjoying tormenting Kurtis at every turn along the day -from just touching him, taking away any toys he happened to pick up and then, to flat out pushing him over and then, standing there asking Maya and I "Wah happen a Kurtis?" Gee, I dunno other than the fact he was trotting around very nicely until you put a hand out and gave him a shove, which resulted in his landing with a big splat on the floor!

This went on most of the afternoon and into the evening hours! About 8:30 or so, my son stopped by having just gotten home from his week's runs and he brought the big and beautiful "Bon" with him. He brought the dog into the house on a heavy duty lease and then, decided he was going to go upstairs and talk to Maya -who by that time had been sent to bed because she was misbehaving so much. When Clate went to go upstairs, he handed me the lease and started to the steps only to have Bon decide he should follow his new master too and in the process, pulled a little tug on the lease that ended up being a strong enough tug that it pulled me, in my computer chair, half-way across the living room floor!

Then, the son-in-law decided now was a good time to let Jorge come back into the house to take care of her babies -a move that really excited good old Bon and put Jorge's hair straight up along with giving a really high arch to her back as the two of them stood there, basically face to face -ok, a couple of feet maybe between them - but they had a major stare-down contest going for a while. That is, until Mandy got worried and got up to pick Jorge up and carry her out to my room and put her in the box with her babies. Even though she was very safely ensconced there, it was obvious Jorge was still on the alert with the dog here as she got up on the top of the wall that divides my room from the foyer and perched there, watching Bon's every movement from on high until Clate decided to return back to his house.

Mandy and I also decided when Clate left that we needed a major breather from the fits these kids were having all day and decided to go up to Clate's house where we could sit as his bar and enjoy a couple long, cold mugs of draft beer! Yay! Yuengling, on tap! Really tasted darned good too -it surely did!

Last night, Mandy, Maya and I ventured down to Bellefonte to watch the elementary school's band concert. And, the highlight of that, for us, was seeing my older grandson do a solo on his trumpet of "Yankee Doodle Dandy!" He's been taking trumpet lessons for the past two years but this was his first band concert as well as his first ever solo performance too! And he did quite well although I'm betting before his solo, his stomach was totally full of those nervous butterflys!

And now, just for your viewing pleasure, here's a couple pictures -maybe I'll even post a video too of the band concert although the videos are very dark - so much so that you can barely see most of the kids because of the lighting in the auditorium. Wish they'd have had a spotlight to put on the kids who had little solos during the concert as at least then, you'd have been able to actually SEE the child performing!

This was my grandson's solo performance. The only area that had lighting was the middle to back portion of the stage -the rest of the place was darkened. You'll have to take my word for this but my grandson was standing at the far left of the stage -as it faces the audience -while playing his solo. We were seated up in the balcony area and it was difficult for us to see a lot of what was going on due to the darkened area of the auditorium. So my apologies for the video as far as viewability, but at least the sound of his trumpet came through loud and clear!

This is after the concert - Maya and Alex -just outside the school building. Maya was so happy to see Alex -and then, to do "smiles" with him (her term for taking pictures) and I especially liked this picture because it had both of them smiling so nicely!

This one, taken Sunday late in the afternoon, of Kurtis and Maya as we were heading out to take a little walk up and down the street here. This was a special request from Mandy that Grammy take the two hooligans for a walk so she could run the vacuum cleaner! Kurtis goes into meltdown whenever he hears the vacuum cleaner running - along with the portable mixer, the food processor and the hair dryer. Hearing the lawn mower running when Bill -or my son -happens to be cutting the front portion of the grass is also another noise Kurtis has a severe aversion to as well!

And last - but definitely not least - here's the big and beautiful Bon, resting his bones on the floor while Clate, Mandy and I indulged in a couple draft brews. Just look at those wrinkles on his forehead and tell me it doesn't just make you want to reach down and pet him, scratch him a bit behind the ears while you're at it? In less than a week's time, Bon has learned a few commands now and responds very nicely to Clate -also is becoming familiar with the sight of daughter Mandy and me, even the kids, coming by to say hello to him too!

And that's it for this morning!

Hope everyone has a really great day and that everyone is also getting their Peace Globe ready to fly tomorrow too now. That's the day to do that ya know - Dona Nobis Pacem for June 4, 2008.

A great day to behold!

More Absurdities From "The Shrub"

The late (and really great) columnist/writer, Molly Ivins, frequently referred to DUBYA as "The Shrub" - a nickname I always thought was pretty appropriate. Hence the title of this week's Bushisms -which as you can see, are once again posted a bit late. My apologies. It's been a busy weekend and first day of the new week too.
