Another Side to Math?

My daughter put a post up on Facebook today that, when I read it, I cracked up!

Seems Miss Maya came home from school this afternoon and was quite put out over a math question she had done incorrectly. She asked her Mom what was wrong with her answer; why did she get it marked as being wrong?

I'm copying over Mandy's Facebook post here so you can enjoy the laugh we both had -at poor little Maya's expense. But it does illustrate one of the so-called "problems" that autistic kids often do experience -their inability to understand the actual meanings of various things. Well, actually -she understood the meaning one way but the teacher meant it differently, ya know.

my literal thinker...the paper they did in class today, question #3...How many teddy bears are left? there are 5 on the left side, and then a minus sign, then 3 on the right side. her answer? 5! She asked me why she got it wrong, there are 5 teddy bears on the left. I explained....it is a math problem and she was supposed to count the bears and then subtract. She says............OHHHHHHHH I get it....DUH! I just had to laugh
Guess we're gonna have to do  a little bit of explaining that "left" can mean a side and it can also mean "left" as in left behind or subtraction, aren't we?

Problems like that is common among non-autists as well. Just think of all the misunderstandings one has been involved in due to words that are either written or spoken the same way

She deserves a hug for seeing the point :-)

I did get a quick laugh, but then I started wondering about a teacher who would write a problem in such a way. Any kid just learning math could misunderstand the wording of the problem. I know I always had trouble with word problems.

On the bright side, Maya knows her left from her right!

AS a kid, I would have said 5 just to annoy my math teacher:)

Well that was the answer really, wasn't it? Just depends which way you look at it.

Well, I think it goes to show that Maya is paying close attention to detail! She may not have understood what she was supposed to do but she got all the facts straight!
